It is a common question. Is it safe to drive with a cracked or chipped windshield? While the danger of driving with a chipped or cracked windshield may not be as imminent as a flat tire, there are dangers.
Structural integrity of your windshield
Your windshield protects you in the event of a car accident. For example, a crack can affect the structural integrity of your windshield especially upon impact. You should also understand that if your car were to roll the roof of your vehicle is supported by the windshield. The windshield plays a vital role in your passengers safety. The more you understand about the potential safety concerns the better you are informed to decide when/if you repair a cracked windshield.
Did you know that if a passenger airbag deployed against a windshield that was already cracked, the windshield could easily give way and the impact could break the glass entirely. This would mean the airbag could deploy straight through the windshield instead of deploying toward the passenger. It is easy to see the danger if your passenger has no airbag and no windshield to act as a protective barrier.
Unfortunately, there is no way to know for sure what will happen in the event of an accident. But, the old saying “better than safe than sorry” certainly applies.
Is the crack in your direct line of view?
If the crack is in your direct line of view that makes it much more dangerous. It is NOT recommended that you ever drive if there is a crack in your view — actually, most insurance companies require you replacement the windshield even if the crack is minor. If the crack is on the passenger side you should replace for the structural integrity issues we’ve already addressed. Glass is unpredictable. A small chip or crack may stay the same size for years and never cause you any problems, while another chip or crack may spread the length of the windshield immediately. Chips can be sealed relatively inexpensively and quickly to avoid further damage. Windshields with cracks should be replaced for optimal safety.
